Wanda enrolled at Top-Win, a trade school recognized by Oprah Winfrey and run by Linda Butler, where she developed a comprehensive understanding of construction. Learning about electricity, plumbing, and carpentry, she not only saw it as an opportunity to improve her home but also as a stepping stone towards a promising career.
Wanda's hard work paid off when she was offered placement tests for utility companies in New Jersey and Philadelphia. Choosing the natural gas industry, she embarked on an adventure that would change her life forever. Remembering her first day at work, Wanda recalls the excitement, fear, and the eagerness to learn the trade. The role was challenging, physically demanding, and sometimes even intimidating. Yet, her unwavering determination, coupled with her prayer for strength, kept her going.
The Foreman Dream
Her dedication and tireless work ethic led her to move up the ranks at the company. She started as a Distribution Laborer before becoming the first female Pipe Mechanic. This position was a significant achievement in her career and carried great responsibility as she was now tasked with repairing all damaged pipes. It was a role she performed diligently, ensuring safety and efficiency every time.
Wanda’s journey did not stop there. Feeling the desire to oversee things, she started preparing for the next big step - the role of Foreman. The training was grueling, with studying so intense that it sometimes caused headaches. But Wanda was determined, visiting other foremen at their sites, and engaging in deep study sessions. Her perseverance paid off when she became the first female to complete the Foreman's course.
Public Service
Throughout her career, Wanda faced challenging situations such as dealing with building collapses, explosions, and sinkholes that swallowed SUV trucks. However, she remained focused, learning how to direct, be patient, fair, and make safety-oriented decisions. Now, she's a much stronger version of herself, having learned invaluable life and professional lessons along the way.
